Our Legislative Advocacy
Every year, the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless works to develop a platform of General Assembly legislation to promote our mission and goals.
We also work with our federal congressional delegation to Washington, D.C. on issues of national importance. In the past, this has included reauthorization of the McKinney-Vento Homelessness Act and stimulus fund planning and dispersal.
This year, after discussions with our constituents, members and allies; plus a survey distributed to all of those community members, our priorities are focused on ending the ongoing crisis in homelessness while also reducing conditions that cause Rhode Islanders to become homeless.
Thus our legislative priorities for 2013 are to:
- Rental vouchers to immediately get people off the street and into housing.
- Prevent foreclosure with the passage of "Just Cause" and Right to Rent legislation.
- Reform payday lending by ending outrageous high-interest lending rates.
